Construction of the Park

Approximately 600 cubic metres of fill was required to create the free-flowing forms for this facility.

The first loads of fill were delivered in July and then the area was compacted and shaped to the required contours.

Council employees did this with volunteer labour and Roy Shepard Soil & Gravel supplied approximately 250 cubic metres at a greatly discounted fee.

The Gundary Oval Management Committee contacted Skillshare in May 1995, requesting their assistance to complete the project. This request was met with a favourable response. A Skillshare crew under a New Works Opportunity Project, commenced on Wednesday, 11th October at no cost to the project itself, providing valuable experience to15 unemployed people.

The shape was fine-tuned and the setting out of the various jumps was carried out during October. Then the steel reinforcement and the formwork was put in place during early November. Some small sections of concrete were poured for the 3/4 pyramid and quarter pipe on 9th November.

The main concrete pour for the snakerun and crater was carried out on Friday 17th November.

This involved 41 cubic metres of concrete, which was sprayed on with equipment and labour provided by Ricky, Danny and Guido Guselli of Mediterranean Pools from Kianga at no cost to the project.

Several local Concrete Contractors volunteered a hard days labour assisting the Skillshare crew with their expertise.

Skillshare concreted the flat area in the next couple of weeks for completion by Christmas.

Landscaping and the final touches were carried out through into 1996.

The design is loosely based on a small section of the Belconnen Skate Boarding facility and includes a Snake run, Crater, Jumps and Free Style area.

It will be unsupervised and Council's insurers have advised that it will be covered as per any other playground.

The design of this facility allows it to be used by many riders (skateboarders and in-line rollers) at the same time and for all skill levels.

Users should wear protective clothing for their safety, such as Elbow pads, Kneepads, Helmets and proper Boots. Appropriate signs have been purchased and will be displayed in prominent positions.
